popcorn…for one

Until recently, I had never been to a movie by myself. And I’m not exactly sure why that was, but it was just something that I’d never done. Perhaps I had always thought of movies as a night out with friends or as a date night, but the idea of going alone never appealed to me. And I think that given a choice, I always preferred to be in the comfort of my own home watching a movie rather than alone in a movie theather. But when you’re single, this is something that you’ll probably face at some point in your life. So one night when I needed to get out of the house, I ventured to the movies by myself. And instead of feeling insecure about being there alone, which I had thought I might feel, I actually embraced it. I grabbed my ticket and some popcorn and reveled in the fact that for the first time ever in my life, the popcorn was all mine.

she got me again…

Believe it or not, I’m still thinking about the spaghetti bolognese I had over the weekend at Scampo. I thought I had tasted nirvana when I tried Lydia Shire’s classic tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza a couple of months ago but this trumped it. Nirvana again. And it’s so simple – just a perfect combination of beef, pork and veal. And of course, San Marzano tomatoes. But it’s using the best ingredients that make something so totally perfect.

It just continues to be the thread in how I cook, and how I eat. I like simple, good ingredients and believe that if you use the best, the product will be a result of that. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated and even everyday cooking should be something to savor. And in the end, it’s the simplest of dishes that are often the most enjoyable, and the most memorable.

fabulous Italian food

I love discovering new dishes that really surprise me. On a recent trip to La Morra in Brookline Village for dinner, my friends and I enjoyed a really fabulous meal, start to finish. But one dish in particular was truly fabulous: the strozzapreti. These traditional Italian baked cheese and vegetable dumplings were made with beet greens and ricotta cheese and were served with a warm tomato sauce. They were so delicate and light they melted in my mouth. And they were probably one of the best things I’ve ever eaten…anywhere.

La Morra is a quaint little restaurant serving some of the best traditional Northern Italian food in the city. If you’ve never been, it’s most certainly worth the trip. For more information, visit www.lamorra.com.

La Morra

coconut bliss…indeed

It’s fair to say that I love all things ice cream. In fact, I tend to classify it as its own food group. So needless to say, I eat it pretty often and love to find new ones to enjoy. And if they happen to be good for you (it is still ice cream!), all the better.

Recently, I was introduced to Coconut Bliss ice cream. Mind you, I was a bit skeptical of ice cream that appeared to be this good for you. But the vegan, organic, agave-sweetened coconut milk ice cream proved me wrong. Oh, did I mention it’s also soy, dairy and gluten-free (they accomplished a lot with this ice cream!) One might think that something so good for you can’t taste that good, but in fact it does. This is the real deal. It’s rich and creamy and full of great flavor. My favorite is the Naked Coconut (for the pure coconut experience) but I’m anxious to try their newest flavor, Pineapple Coconut as soon as I can get my hands on it. The ice cream is available in 10 flavors as well as novelty bars. It’s a small, family-owned company who’s committed to sustainable lifestyle practices, which makes enjoying their ice cream something that you can really feel good about, on many levels.
