5 tips for cooking in a small kitchen

Make the most out of whatever space you have with these simple guidelines:

1. be organized. make sure everything has its place.
2. keep counters free of as much clutter as you can.
3. make sure what you have is functional. you don’t need a lot of utensils to cook well, just make sure what you have is the best and the most useful.
4. mis en place (everything in place) is very important. have ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start cooking.
5. clean as you go. it keeps your space clean while you’re cooking and the less to clean up at the end, the better.

shop smart

I’m constantly amazed every time I go to the market to buy groceries. For almost every item, there are a vast number of options from which to choose. Buying a simple box of pasta is no longer an option. But what I love about it is that you can really “choose” what you’re buying. Whole-wheat vs. plain pasta, low-sodium vs. low fat etc. And while I love all the options, it’s important to be careful and choose wisely. Even though it may say low-fat or whole grain, it may have more sugar or sodium (or some other artificial badness) than its counterparts so be sure you’re choosing what’s best for you, based on what’s important to you. Some choices are easier than others and make for quick decisions. Others not so much. So be sure to read the labels carefully and decide which of the options are right for you.

1 head cauliflower. 3 great recipes.

I think in many ways, cauliflower is a very unappreciated vegetable. It’s not the prettiest guy on the block, or the most flavorful, but it does offer curious folks like myself a blank canvas for dressing it up. And because it’s low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in vitamin C, it makes it an ideal vegetable to incorporate into your diet. I bought one head of it and came up with three great ways to enjoy it:

Seared Scallops with Cauliflower Purée
Roasted Cauliflower with Parmesan
Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Roasted Cauliflower

Even if you think you don’t like cauliflower, give these recipes a try. You may be surprised at how good it can taste!

cooking for one

It’s been several months since I launched the Gourmet Recipes for One website and I’ve certainly done more cooking in that time than I ever thought I would. When I started living alone again, it was really easy to fall into the take-out trap and not want to cook for myself. But when I really thought about it, I realized how much I missed cooking and how much I enjoy the simple pleasure of eating something really wonderful and delicious, and not having to go out for it all the time. But what I have really rediscovered in this time is that cooking for yourself doesn’t have to be time-consuming at all. So whenever you’re feeling uninspired to cook, check out the website for lots of great, really quick and easy recipes.
