Last weekend I hosted my first cookie swap and it was a great way to kick of the holiday season. It’s a fun, easy way to get together to celebrate the season. This year, I made Donna Hay’s recipe for cinnamon candy canes. The recipe turned out to be really easy as well as delicious. Even though there were a few among the group who claimed not to be able to bake, the end results were all amazingly delicious and creative. And a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Hosting a swap is a lot of fun. Here are a few suggestions:
invite people early in the season, before the holiday season gets in full swing. A weekend afternoon works really well;
ask your guests to bring two dozen cookies which gives you plenty to sample, and plenty to bring home;
provide your guests with light, finger food for nibbling. serve dishes that you make in advance. be sure to have pretty plates and napkins on hand as well (I use decorative paper ones for easy cleanup);
have a few different options for drinks including something non-alcoholic. it’s also nice to offer a festival cocktail like an eggnog martini;
ask your guests to bring copies of the recipes for sharing;
have containers, tins or boxes for your guests so they can fill them up with cookies to take home;
decorate a beautiful table and be sure to leave plenty of room for trays of cookies;
and for a bit of fun, have a prize for best cookie (voted by the group). happy swapping…
