the not-quite-a-reuben burger

If you like a classic reuben sandwich than you are going to love this burger as well. The caraway seeds form a great, crunchy crust on one side of the burger while the creamy dressing and softened onions mellow out their bold flavor. If you like your sandwich with sauerkraut, then feel free to add it on top of your burger as well.

4 tablespoons Thousand Island dressing
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/2 large onion, thinly sliced
3/4 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/2 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper
1-2 slices swiss cheese
Sourdough hamburger roll, split

1. In a small bowl, stir together dressing and paprika until combined. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
2. In a medium sauté pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until caramelized and lightly golden brown in color, stirringly occasionally, about 20-25 minutes. Set aside.
3. Meanwhile, on a cutting board, gently chop caraway seeds and set aside.
4. Preheat grill or grill pan to medium heat.
5. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef and Worcestershire sauce. Gently mix together to form a burger. Season both sides of burger with salt and pepper. Season one side generously with caraway seeds, making an even layer on top that will form a crust. Grill burger, non-caraway seed side first, for 4-5 minutes. Flip and grill on other side for another 4-5 minutes, until desired doneness.
6. Top burger with cheese and continue cooking until cheese melts. Tent burger with aluminum foil and allow to rest about 5 minutes before serving. Place dressing on both sides of roll, followed by burger and top with caramelized onions.

Serves 1.
